About Dr. James Chiu, MD
Meet Dr. James Chiu, MD
Dr. James Chiu is a Vanderbilt-trained physician with over two decades of experience in primary and family medicine. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 1998 and his MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 2003. He completed his Family Medicine residency at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia, then returned to Vanderbilt to earn a Master’s degree in Medical Informatics from the Department of Biomedical Informatics — a program he completed concurrently with clinical work at Medica Para La Familia, an urgent care clinic serving the underserved Hispanic population in Nashville and Memphis.
In 2010, Dr. Chiu was recruited to Winchester, Tennessee, where he has practiced as a solo physician for over 16 years. His training in both medicine and informatics gives him a distinctive edge: he leverages technology to provide faster results, clearer communication, and more coordinated care. His EMR is fully integrated with Highpoint Health (formerly Southern TN Regional Health Center), so patients receive imaging and lab results within 24 hours. On appropriate visits, he provides typed medication lists — including what each medication is for — so patients leave with clarity, not confusion.
Dr. Chiu is also an X-waiver certified physician with the DEA, allowing him to prescribe Suboxone and Subutex for opioid use disorder — a service he provides with genuine care and structured clinical protocols. Outside of traditional primary care, he has expanded the practice to offer medical aesthetics services through the Alma Harmony platform, bringing laser and aesthetic treatments to Winchester for the first time in a physician-led setting.

Our Mission
At Winchester Primary Care, our mission is to deliver thorough, personal, and proactive healthcare to every patient who walks through our door — regardless of age, background, or complexity of their needs. Dr. Chiu believes that the best medicine starts with listening: truly understanding a patient’s full story, not just their chief complaint. By combining that attentive approach with advanced in-office capabilities and a small, responsive team, we are able to provide a level of care that larger, busier practices often cannot.
We are committed to doing as much as possible in-house — from same-day lab draws with next-day results, to in-office procedures like skin biopsies, joint injections, laceration repair, and ultrasound imaging — so our patients spend less time being shuffled between specialists and more time getting well. Every patient deserves to feel heard, understood, and cared for. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, every single day.
Our Practice
Winchester Primary Care is a solo practice built on the belief that smaller means better. With just Dr. Chiu, a front desk secretary, and an office manager who doubles as a medical assistant, our team is lean by design. That means your concerns don’t get lost in the shuffle, your questions get answered quickly, and your care is never handed off to someone who doesn’t know your story.
Dr. Chiu sees patients of all ages — from newborns to seniors — though in practice his panel skews heavily toward adults and geriatric patients, giving him the depth of experience of an internist with the whole-family accessibility of a family medicine physician. He manages a wide range of chronic conditions including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, hypothyroidism, and COPD, and is comfortable with controlled substance management for appropriate pain, anxiety, and ADHD patients — following strict protocols including urine drug screens and pill counts.
The practice also features two beloved companion animals: Peaches, a friendly Labrador Retriever, and Pugsley, a black pug. Patients regularly comment that the dogs make the office feel less clinical and more like home — which is exactly the point. Peaches even earned a feature in the local Good News Exchange newspaper for the joy she brings to patients.
